Madrid is the largest city of Spain and the capital of the country. With the population of about 3.3 million people Madrid is the most populous city in Spain and one of the most populous in entire Europe. Situated on the river Manzanares the capital of Spain is considered to be among the most vivid European cities and every year is visited by lots of tourists. Madrid is one of the most preferred tourist destinations in Europe.
The history of Madrid leads its way from the prehistoric times. Though the history the city belonged to the Romans and Moors until it was finally fought back in the 11th century. Different civilizations left great monuments of their cultures and now Spanish capital can be proud of its collection of attractions. The most visited architectural monuments of Madrid are The Royal Palace, The Gran Via, Plaza de Espana, Palacio de Comunicaciones and many others. Religious people will be interested in visiting such holy places as San Nicolas de los Servitas church of the 12th century, San Pedro el Real, San Francisco el Grande Basilica and Almudena Cathedral. In Madrid there are also many museums and galleries. The most popular are El Prado, National Archaeological Museum of Spain, Museum of the Americas, Royal Palace of Madrid, Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, Naval Museum and others.
